Hit n Hope: A Character Cabaret - Adelaide Fringe Review

Strap yourselves in for endless laughs, intimate audience action, and an ode to singledom with Nicola Pohl, Stephanie Beza, and Tessa Luminati as they take on the duty of impersonating weirdos, creeps, and downright repulsive men which women encounter in the dating pool of the 21st century. 

The three await on stage as audience members wander in, dressed in glitz and glamour gowns and dive straight into song and dance about the green and red flags you’ll find in men. Overtly heading straight towards the crowd, the early stages of the performance see the trio scattering around the venue and interacting with the audience. 

There is quite a bit of audience interaction throughout the performance, which integrates well with the characters they are impersonating and hypes the audience up. The unspoken interactions between the audience and the array of characters are a hilarious experience of awkwardness, both watching on and being the subject of. 

From Craig and the boys, an utterly grotesque janitor, finance bros, and men having conversations at a urinal, Pohl, Beza, and Luminati embody their (unofficial) alter egos to the fullest. They really are true depictions of what it’s actually like to date strange and odd men, right down to the outfit choices. 

Let’s have a moment for all the sly and seductive head turns and stares towards the audience. Seriously, they’re one of the most funniest moments throughout the entire show. The strange mannerisms, projected bodily sounds, and character development too will lead you to uncontrollably cack it.

Moments of girl gang energy are blended into the segments, such as hot girl brunch gossip conversations, grieving stolen items from one night stands, being ghosted, and one badass hand-clapping showcase. It certainly gets very visual during the sexual innuendos, but keep your eyes peeled for a barrel of laughs.

Tie this all together with witty original music, awe-inspiring dance routines, and the best energy from all three performers and you’ve got pure comedy gold. Hit n Hope captures the true despair and comedic beauty of the male dating epidemic, you gotta hit it and hope for the best!
