The Commons Studio + Exchange

Store is now permanently closed.

In the world of second-hand and pre-loved fashion, there are various options, such as op-shops, thrift stores, and online marketplaces. Many however, require you to sift through unorganised racks and collections of clothing.

The Commons Studio + Exchange is a store that offers a new concept for pre-loved fashion. The founder of The Commons, Emily Sheahan, is also a co-founder of Slow Fashion Festival, which was featured in the Adelaide Fashion Festival of 2018.

Focusing on designer and vintage pieces, The Commons features a curated range of clothing, accessories, and footwear. Some of the labels that you may come across in the store include Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Acne Studios, and Issey Miyake.

In addition to their range of designer and vintage pieces, they also stock local and independent labels, such as Re-Swim Club, Matea Gluscevic Handmade, and Degoey Planet.

Their exchange rate is also one of the highest when compared to similar stores, offering an exchange rate of 30% cash or 50% in-store credit (GST exclusive) of the approximate re-sale value of an item. The exchange process is simple, and is arranged by booking an appointment through their website. From there, you bring your items into the store for appraisal, which will take around ten to thirty minutes.

Having gone through their exchange process with a pair of Adidas sneakers, I can say that it was seamless, and the re-sale value given was fair.

Driven by sustainability in fashion, The Commons offers a custom rework and tailoring service. This service is suitable for garments that require extensive alterations or customisations, whether it be adding embellishments, unique details, or achieving the absolute best fit for you.

I have also used their tailoring service for a pair of Reformation jeans that were one to two sizes too big for me. Their current in-house tailor is Natalie of Re-Swim Club, who has a high level of expertise in tailoring. During the initial fitting, she was very communicative in what needed to be done, and pinned the jeans accordingly to my requests.

The end result was an amazing-fitting pair of jeans that have easily become one of my favourites for years to come. What was done: two to three inches taken off the waistband by placing two darts on the back, back pockets taken off and re-positioned, and tapering of the outer thigh area.

So, if you find yourself unsure about how to part with your beloved vintage and designer piece, or have a piece that doesn’t fit you quite right, visit The Commons Studio + Exchange and enjoy the good vibes from Emily and her store.
