ARCANA: Wheel of Fortune - Adelaide Fringe Review

A devilish woman stands behind a multi-coloured wheel of fortune

Be transported to the depths of hell with your devil for the night, Whisky A’More, who is the leader of the pack in this tarot-card themed variety game show.

Featuring a night of saucy burlesque, drag, and audience games, each performance promises a variety of devilish delights and a soul-collection fest.

Whisky struts her stuff onto the stage, asserting themselves as the devil in the house, and we’re greeted by her servants who bring out the bejeweled wheel of fortune. This wheel determines the order of the performances and each performer’s tarot alter-egos, meaning that no two shows are the same.

The burlesque and drag acts throughout ARCANA are entertaining and saucy, and we had the likes of Winchester Angel, Dakota Fann’ee, Cherrybomb, and Viola Verve knock our socks off. Each performer isn’t scared to get down and dirty with crowd members, so be warned mortal souls.

Some of the jokes during the performance intermissions fell a little short of resonating with the relatively small audience, but Whisky’s efforts to keep the chaos contained were charming, displaying just the right amount of sass and fury.

Whisky also gives us a little tease of their burlesque abilities, which were fabulously seductive.

There’s an unexpected twist at the end of the show when it comes to deciding whose soul is being captured by the devil, and you could almost say that it’s almost quite light hearted and a celebration of sorts in hell.

It was evidently a challenge to engage with the small audience who were present during the show, but ARCANA has all the makings of a great variety show which features a diverse selection of performers, identities, and bodies.
